Overview of Education in Sichuan

Sichuan is a major province in education with a long history of education. The people of Sichuan have a fine tradition of farming, studying, passing on knowledge, and promoting education. As early as the end of the Western Han Dynasty in 141 BC, the governor of Shu County, Wen Weng, established the "Shishi Jingshe" (now known as "Shishi Middle School"), which was the first official school in Chinese history. Sichuan is a province with a large population, economy, and education. There are currently 23000 schools of all levels and types in the province, with 16.37 million students and 1.01 million full-time teachers. The overall scale ranks sixth in the country and first in the western region. In terms of basic education, there are a total of 12900 kindergartens with 2.5397 million children enrolled; There are 9408 primary and secondary schools with 9.6905 million students enrolled. In terms of vocational education, there are 363 secondary vocational schools with 908000 students enrolled. In the field of higher education, Sichuan has a total of 137 ordinary universities with 2.05 million full-time undergraduate and junior college students, a gross enrollment rate of over 56%, and has entered a stage of popularization, connotation, and high-quality development.

Sichuan attaches great importance to the internationalization of education. It has formulated the "the Belt and Road" education action plan, adhered to the "four directions of expansion and global opening", continued to increase cooperation, set up government scholarships for foreign students in Sichuan, and encouraged outstanding foreign students to study and engage in scientific research in Sichuan universities. At present, our province has conducted extensive educational exchanges and cooperation with more than 100 countries and regions around the world. A total of 28 universities in the province have established 58 Sino foreign cooperative education institutions and projects (including 8 institutions and 50 projects). In 2023, there are a total of 51 universities in Sichuan Province that recruit and train international students in China, including 33 undergraduate colleges and 18 vocational colleges. There are a total of 10846 international students from universities in the province, including 5911 students from 8 "Double First Class" universities, accounting for 54.3%.
